The author wrote about her experience within the college community. She said she was encouraged to join a group during her welcome orientation, and that it was important to do that right away. I disagree because I believe that it is important as a freshmen to get adjusted to the college life, and to focus on earning good grades in your first classes. I do however agree with her depiction of the freshmen community as youth, pop culture, and getting a degree. Everyone freshmen I have met this year fit those three things perfectly.
One thing I liked from the reading was the RA's idea for the hall to write all the things they want changed on the floor. For example, one student said "wipe your hair off the shower walls". This idea would be a great addition to my hall, because nobody cleans anything after themselves.
The authors idea on racism in college as being actively their, and that every student reported at least witnessing one racist experience on campus is interesting to me. I personally don't notice any racism or racist remarks here at Bloomsburg. Perhaps its because I'm oblivious to it, or maybe its because times have changed since this book was published. Racism is slowly starting to disappear in our society, and I generally see many diverse groups of students hanging together.

This reading reminded me of a movie I saw, Tuesdays With Morrie. The story was about a dying man, and his last six weeks of living. One thing I have found about elderly people is they are much wiser than younger people. In that sense, the story caught my interest. All the information about the work environment in the restaurant did not catch my interest.. I personally worked in foods and disliked everything about it.
The fact that the mother was able to vividly recall all the memories from her work even in her "stonato" state of mind, blew my own mind. I believe it was due to all the hours she spent working their, and the fact that she enjoyed those hours spent working their. In the movie I watched, Morrie enjoyed his job too and cherished the memories he had there. This may suggest that people who enjoyed their jobs, have a better quality adult life.
